I decided

Hi my name is Julie and I have borderline personality disorder.

I am constantly in and out of hospital — I used to indulge in a lot of self harm behaviour and I did not know why.

I did not always want to end my life. So why would I cut myself and need stitches — I don’t know?

I even went as far as swallowing things that should not be swallowed, like knives. I needed surgery to remove the knife from my stomach, then a week later I swallowed a knife again and required a second surgery.

Thank you to all those who have helped me get to where I am today.

After healing from the surgeries I continued with swallowing objects, but this time it was batteries, which burnt a hole through my esophagus into my stomach requiring a colonoscopy to have the batteries removed.

During these hospital stays I always had a security guard stay with me to make sure I was kept safe.

After this incident I developed a hernia from my procedures, along with kidney stones.

But I have decided I want to turn my life around, so I am doing what many said would be impossible for me — I got a job and have managed to keep it.

I want to educate others about mental illness.

I have been going for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) which has helped to turn my thoughts around and see life more positively.

Thank you to all those who have helped me get to where I am today.

Congratulations. Good work. Remember it started with You wanting change

Thank you for sharing. That took courage. You have been through a lot. I wish you inner peace and happiness.

I’m proud of you, for a few reasons
1) Your bravery for sharing your story
2) Your courage to “prove them wrong” and hold down a full time job (trust me, I know it’s not easy at times!)
3) Your desire to turn your life around
4) Your desire to educate others about mental illnesses
