I actually witnessed the anxiety attack described in From Boy to Machine, and man, it’s pretty weird to see something so beautiful come out of something so scary. James and I deal with anxiety in different ways – I get clingy and grabby while James collapses in on himself. For him to come back from that and write about it in such a haunting way is nothing short of amazing #writingashealing
From Boy to Machine
Paper-thin skin ripples after every pulse,
vibrating so rapidly you’d swear
it was never there.
His face is a thermos;
lips curl in on themselves over the heat
of moth corpses burning in his stomach.
Every motion clings like static,
while tremors carve
a refuge in the spine.
They crawl along the nervous system,
seizing the body’s reins;
muscles creak like a wooden armchair.
The town’s been gutted, stings
like poorly-tempered metal:
brittle, numb, electric,
all the clichés of television
experienced first hand.
