Libraries are typically associated with borrowing physical copies of books. In this day and age with the Internet, Kobos and Kindles, it has never been easier to read books online. Libraries have had to adapt to this change and what many people do not know is that they now offer a lot more than just borrowing books.

The library has become a place that fosters community and offers many different programs, classes and exhibits. On the Toronto Public Library website, you can find out what programs your local library offers.

These programs can a great asset if you are trying to find in activities that you will enjoy, which is an important part of self-care. This can improve your overall happiness and can be motivation for other areas of your life. You might not think that the library can be a place to look to expand your horizons but you would be surprised with the breadth of activities that you can find.

For example, the Don Mills Library offers poetry life writing circles on Thursday evenings. This is an ongoing writing workshop that is open to writers of all ages to explore their poetry. As well, computer training and tech drop ins are offered to help people use technology for free. This type of program is especially great for seniors who have extra time and a desire to learn how to use modern technology.

There are library programs for all stages of life.

“Some of the programs do fill up quickly. Some not so much. I would suggest for the ones you have to register for to do it as soon as possible,” said the Don Mills librarian.

The great part about these programs is that you are able to learn something new and expand your skills while meeting new people who are like-minded. This is important when thinking about self-care as you are growing as a person and exercising your strengths.

There are library programs for all stages of life. The Bayview Library offers a lot of programs for new moms to get out and meet each other. It can be very isolating having a newborn and this is an excellent way to find others who are in the same boat.

“The website really has it all. All of our programs are drop ins and a lot of them are newer programs. We are trying to encourage people to come out.” The Bayview librarian said.

And why not? These programs are free and can bring lifelong friendships and adventures. You also get to try something new along the way.

The library is also not just about writing.

At the North York Central Library branch, self-publishing workshops for teens are offered. The latest one is run by Benjamin Gabbay and presents a “step-by-step guide for taking your writing from your computer to a bookshelf at the library.” Adolescence is a crucial time to develop the habit of taking care of yourself and doing the things that you love like pursuing a writing workshop. It is free advice from a professional which can be valuable no matter what you do.

The library is also not just about writing. There are programs teaching you how to best represent yourself on Linked in, group organizing movie nights, personal finance workshops, Shakespeare for Kids, Thought Exchange lectures and more.

Self-care is all about doing what you love and taking care of yourself. Whether it a new cooking class, a technology workshop or self-publishing a book, there library is there to help you find your next adventure free of charge.

Thanks for writing this article. I like the connection you have made between self-care and the resources that public libraries provide free of charge: activities such as socializing within your community and creating at maker spaces. And of course: good reads in all formats including ebooks and streaming movies, and access to the Internet for those who don’t have it.
